In the
photo above (2012) I'm just off work, home, and copying CW. All the ham gear and even the lamp is powered by a
battery charged by solar panels.
A little about me:
I was first
licensed in
1978 as a Novice, upgraded to Advanced a year later, and I
operated for about ten years off and on until life got in the way and I went QRT for a number of years.
Around 1988 I visited a local field day event, got
excited about ham radio all over again, and started this
website. I moved in 1994 and set up the station in the photos on the photos page.
In 1998, I was still mostly listening on the HF bands while improving
my CW copying skills. My antenna was miserable: a random wire, poorly
matched and grounded, so my signal sounds QRP at QRO 100w power. All that
and we are at a fairly low point in the 11 year sunspot cycle, so
mostly all I can do is listen.

In 2008, I moved QTH again, and I'm still mostly
listening, but I
am operating more. The antenna is a little better, a horizontal
dipole about 10 feet off the ground under the eaves of the house, and I
am
venturing into
aspects of ham radio I've neglected in the past, such as digital modes
and mobile and portable operation. Use it or lose it, they
say, so I must get
back to doing more CW if I ever want to get my proficiency back to
where it was years ago. Like so many others who have
websites, I've neglected to keep this one as up-to-date as it could be.
The log pages are definitely out of date. I need to take more
pictures. But I really need to spend less time on the
computer (don't we all?) and more time on the radio. :)
(2018):
I have been
renewing some of my web skills and have experimented with a new website
design for the Humboldt Amateur Radio Club. The club has had a
website for many years, but the content editor has changed hands
several times, and the site became stagnant. After pleading for
club members to take over the website (I was interested, but didn't
have time), in March, 2018, the club approved a new
webmaster, and his design was approved, and I still had my test design
as a part of my own website, but after a a few years, I took it down.
(2021):
Last
year, many things changed. Many of us were under stay-at-home
recommendations, and found time for catching up on projects. This
year, so far, I am still working on catching up on my to-do
lists. I tell myself I should never have put some things off
until retirement. Things take longer to do these days. As a
result, I now say: Never put off until retirement the things you can do
now while you still have the energy to do them. The HARC website
has several editors. You can see the latest version of the official HARC website here: www.humboldt-arc.org.
For a little more detail about me, see my about page.
See you on the
bands.
