Beginners 1 - Starting Out   Back | Next

When I first started making web pages in the 1990's, I was like you. I knew I could probably do it, since others had done it, but I was clueless. What was this thing called HTML anyway? I even bought a "dummy" book on the subject, but it only confused me more.

Then I discovered that my computer had Netscape, and that Netscape had a Composer. I typed up a page. It looked good (at least I thought it did). I put in some photos, and I was proud of myself.

The problem was, it looked different when I viewed it on another computer. The photos and text had moved around to different positions, and things were a mess. I avoided putting it on the web and thought I would have to wait until I could afford to pay someone to do the job.

Has that ever happened to you? If so, you may be tempted, as I was, to make a page using one of the page building services available at free web hosting services such as Geocities, Bravenet, and others.

Woops. What happened? My page looks just like a lot of others. I wanted mine to look different!

As you read the next few pages, you will learn valuable hints and tips to allow you to create better web pages. First, we need to define some terms, so we are all speaking the same language.

Do you already have a web page or site?

I encourage you to experiment. First, save what you have, then make copies. Edit the copies, hit "refresh," and see what happens.

If you have experimented and made a page you like, save it and use it as a template. To use the template, copy it and make changes to the copy. That way, if you don't like what you get, you will always have the original.

"...as a dyslexic typist, I despaired of ever making a single page come out without travail & gnashing of teeth. Your assists with page repair kept me going, I can't thank you enough."
